He started his professional acting career in 1981 when he joined the South West African Performing Arts Council (SWAPAC).From 1982 to 1985, he resided and worked in Cape Town, where he freelanced and spent two years as a CAPAB employee.
Dawid has made Johannesburg his home and place of employment since 1986. He performed with the Market Theatre between the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, working under the direction of Lucille Gillwald, Barney Simon, Claire Stopford, Malcolm Purkey, and Robyn Orlin.
He collaborated with several directors for the Black Sun, PACT, and the Civic Theatre, including Gina Benjamin, Lourens Cilliers, and Ilse van Hemert. He performed in three Handspring Puppet Company productions from 1995 to 2002, all of which were directed by William Kentridge and went on to get extensive international touring. Dawid has also participated in a number of regional theatrical festivals, most notably under the direction of Marthinus Basson.
